Cybersecurity in Direct Selling

Why is threat awareness an important aspect of cybersecurity in direct selling?

As much as cybersecurity is spoken about and there are international days to observe cybersecurity and digital safety, it is widely ignored for the lack of awareness and the unwillingness to invest in cybersecurity. Some consider it unimportant while some think that they are not prone to cyber-attacks. But surprisingly, 43% of cyberattacks are targeted at small businesses for the lack of awareness and technical backing. 23% of the finance and insurance industry faces cybersecurity issues, 17.7% of the manufacturing industry, 11.1% of the energy sector, 10.2% of the retail industry, and 8.7% of professional services face cybersecurity threats in the digital space. The direct selling industries also adapted cybersecurity plans for their smooth functioning.

For an industry like direct selling where there could be people from all walks of life involved with the business with limited technical expertise and education, instilling cybersecurity as responsibility is important rather than just creating awareness or considering it as an obligation. Most of your distributors could be working remotely and will be accessing the system from unknown locations or devices. This increases the risk of exposing your data and information to various malicious attacks that could be unheard of in another part of the world where the organization is based.

Multi-factor authentication for logins, accessing, and transferring of sensitive data should be considered crucial. Educating your distributors on the need to implement periodic password changes and secure log-on should be made fundamental in the organization’s security protocol.

Cybersecurity is indeed a boon for direct selling companies that can help them safeguard organizations' data, information, customers, and systems from being attacked in cyberspace with malicious viruses and attacks.
